Our identities hold incredible power over us—sometimes without us even realizing it. The stories we tell ourselves about who we are can shape our choices, limit our potential, or open doors we never thought possible. I know this firsthand.

The Story I Believed

When I was in fourth grade, I was told I wasn’t good at math. I internalized this belief and carried it with me for years. No matter what opportunities came my way, I didn’t seek help or challenge myself because, in my mind, I simply wasn't good at math—and that was that.

Years later, while working at a community college, a professor asked why I wasn’t taking classes. When I shared my interest in environmental science, I immediately dismissed it, saying I wasn’t good at math. His response surprised me. “That’s probably not true,” he said. He encouraged me to register for classes and see for myself.

Taking that leap shattered my long-held belief. I discovered that not only was I good at math, but I also enjoyed it. I excelled in chemistry and other subjects that once seemed impossible. That experience redefined my sense of self and opened new doors I never thought possible.

The Power of What We Believe

Our beliefs about ourselves often come from external sources—what others tell us, what society expects, and the roles we've been assigned. These beliefs shape our identity, influencing the decisions we make and the opportunities we pursue. The danger lies in accepting them without question.

When we internalize limiting beliefs, we hold ourselves back. But when we begin to question them, we realize that many of the things we believe aren’t absolute truths; they are simply narratives we’ve carried for too long.

Who Are You, Really?

So, how do we begin to challenge these identities and uncover our true potential? It starts with curiosity. Asking yourself the question, “Who am I?” can be incredibly revealing. When you do this, the labels and identities you’ve attached to yourself will rise to the surface. Some of them may be helpful, but others might be holding you back.

Consider these questions:

  • How true are these identities?

  • Are they helping me move forward or keeping me stuck?

  • What identities feel more aligned with who I want to be?

By getting curious and exploring these questions, you can begin to let go of limiting beliefs and replace them with empowering, aligned identities that serve your growth.

Choosing Empowering Identities

Our identity isn’t set in stone. We have the power to shape it, redefine it, and align it with our true selves. Instead of clinging to identities that no longer serve you, consider adopting ones that support your goals and aspirations.

You are not just what others say you are—you are who you choose to be. By stepping into this power, you can create a life that reflects your authentic self, not just the story you've been told.

Start Your Journey Today

Take a moment today to ask yourself, "Who am I?" Get curious about the answers that come up. Challenge the ones that limit you and embrace the ones that inspire you. Your identity is yours to define—make it one that empowers and aligns with your true potential.
