Motivation is the spark that propels us toward our goals, fuels our dreams, and keeps us moving even when the path gets tough. But how does it actually work? And what can we do when motivation feels out of reach? This blog dives into the heart of motivation—what it is, where it comes from, and how you can tap into it to transform your life.

What Is Motivation?

At its core, motivation is the internal or external drive to act, achieve, or create change. According to psychologist Edward Deci, "Human beings have an innate inner drive to be autonomous, self-determined, and connected to one another." This highlights two key types of motivation:

  • Intrinsic Motivation: Driven by internal rewards, such as personal growth, curiosity, or a sense of purpose.

  • Extrinsic Motivation: Driven by external rewards like money, recognition, or social approval.

While both play a role, intrinsic motivation often leads to more sustainable and fulfilling progress.

The Science Behind Motivation

Motivation is deeply tied to how our brain processes rewards. Neuroscience reveals that dopamine—the brain’s “feel-good” chemical—is released when we anticipate achieving a goal. This is why breaking goals into smaller, achievable steps helps maintain momentum.

In the words of James Clear, author of Atomic Habits:“You do not rise to the level of your goals. You fall to the level of your systems.”This insight shows that motivation works best when supported by effective habits and systems.

What Drives Motivation?

Everyone’s motivation is unique, but common drivers include:

  • Purpose: Having a clear “why” behind your actions. Simon Sinek famously said, “Working hard for something we don't care about is called stress; working hard for something we love is called passion.”

  • Growth: The desire to improve and evolve.

  • Connection: Feeling part of something bigger than ourselves.

Reflect on your personal motivators—what makes you excited to wake up in the morning?

Overcoming Motivation Blockers

Even the most driven individuals face challenges like procrastination, fear, or burnout. The key is not to avoid these blocks but to navigate through them.

  • Clarity Over Chaos: When overwhelm sets in, simplify. Focus on one step at a time.

  • Self-Compassion: Recognize that setbacks are part of the journey. As Brené Brown advises, “Talk to yourself like someone you love.”

  • Reframe Failure: See challenges as opportunities to learn and grow.

Strategies to Boost Motivation

  1. Set Clear Goals

Break goals into smaller, actionable steps. Psychologist Gail Matthews found that people who write down their goals are 42% more likely to achieve them.

  2. Find Your Big WHY

Purpose is the ultimate motivator. Reflect on why your goals matter and how they align with your values.

  3. Create Momentum with Small Wins

Celebrate every milestone. As Tony Robbins says, “Progress equals happiness.”

  4. Cultivate Positive Habits

Establish daily routines that support your goals. For example, starting your day with affirmations or gratitude can set a positive tone.

Motivation vs. Discipline

Motivation is a powerful force, but it’s not constant. Discipline bridges the gap during low-motivation periods. Think of it as the foundation that keeps you steady when the spark fades.

Jocko Willink, a former Navy SEAL and author of Discipline Equals Freedom, puts it simply:“Discipline equals freedom. The more discipline you have, the more freedom you’re going to have.”

The Emotional Side of Motivation

Motivation is not just about strategy; it’s deeply tied to emotions. Confidence, resilience, and hope fuel our drive. Conversely, doubt and fear can drain it.

To stay emotionally aligned, try these practices:

  • Visualization: Picture yourself achieving your goal and feeling the success.

  • Journaling: Reflect on your progress and challenges.

  • Gratitude: Focus on what’s going well to maintain a positive mindset.

My Story

Years ago, I struggled to stay motivated in pursuing my passion for coaching. I felt overwhelmed by fear and doubt. But when I reconnected to my “why” and broke my goals into smaller steps, everything shifted. Slowly but surely, I gained the momentum to create the life I dreamed of.

Take Action Today

Motivation starts with action. What’s one step you can take today to move closer to your goals? Remember, it’s not about perfection—it’s about progress.
